What makes a marketer great? You have your own ideas (and I’d love to hear them). These are some of mine.
The Great Marketer (or GM for purposes of this post) is….
1. Politically savvy. Within their own organizations, and their clients’ as well. GMs continually check the lay of the land, so they know where the gold – and the landmines – are buried.
2. A master communicator. GMs are well-spoken, and they’re also deft listeners – they hear subtleties others miss. This enables them to turn the client’s pain into solutions…and profit.
3. Unsinkable. GMs don’t let anything deter them from their goals. They know when to fold ‘em, for sure, but even when that happens, they redraw their plans and float to the top once more.
4. Technically aware. Technology holds no fear for them (or if it does, they find a way to conquer it). GMs use the tools available to them: Webinars, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and whatever else is coming down the pike.
5. A master plate spinner. Like the plate spinners on the old Ed Sullivan show, GMs are gifted time managers. It’s second nature for them to keep everything in motion – successfully.
6. Not ashamed of their limitations. They play to their strengths, but they don’t hesitate to call for reinforcements in areas where they’re not as strong. GMs aren’t afraid to delegate – that’s one of the reasons they’re GMs.
7. Curious. GMs always needs to know more… about the client, the marketplace, the competition, their own company, the world, and especially themselves. To me, this is the most important quality of all. It’s this unending quest for knowledge that truly puts the G in GM.
